HET Grooming Tips June 2011

Murky sanitizing solutions? A little too much hair on that round brush? When you walk into your hair salon, you're not just putting your next style on their hands. For the next hour or so, you're handing over your hair's health, too. Here are the key things to keep an eye on your next trip to the salon.

Tool check: Brushes and combs are tools that stylists often use. Take a quick look to see that if there’s any pile of someone else’s hair on them before your stylist uses them on you.

Look down: Overall cleanliness is a sign that your salon cares about hygiene. If the floor looks like it's ready to be put on a leash, walked and fed - maybe they aren't paying enough attention to it. No one wants to be pampered in a sea of hair.

Icky sinks: Before you have your hair washed, take a quick peek into the sink to see that there isn't any build-up of hair-coloring chemicals or any hair in it. You don't want all those things smeared all over your hair!

Tainted towels: Towels should be neatly stacked where you can see them. If they're pulled out of a bin, how do you know which is clean and which is not? Don't be afraid to ask for a fresh one if you have doubts or if the towel looks or smells a little funky.
Your hair is your greatest visible accessory. There are some basic tips and tricks in the hair care world to keep your hair healthy and looking at its best. Here are some celebrity hair tips worth trying!

Don’t over wash! Your hair has natural oils which give you that gorgeous shine and luster. Washing the hair too often or with harsh shampoos can strip the hair of these oils, leaving it dry and lifeless. A general rule is to wash your hair every other day. If you have thicker hair, you may want to wait a bit longer. –Ken Paves (celebrity hair stylist)

Towel or air dry? If you have the time, let your hair dry naturally until it’s only slightly damp before blow drying. This will save you time and you’ll also avoid damaging your hair with too much heat. –Heather Graham

Less is more. When it comes to products, less is more. You don’t want to see the entire product on your hair, so start with just a little bit. You can always add more. –Kim Kardashian
